Packing Adjusting Gland

Daily service

Check swivel for visual signs of damage or wear. If found, repair before using.
Lubricate bearing case. After swivel has been in operation for approximately two (2) hours, grease bearings until grease exits the upper relief fitting, which is located between at the top of the bearing housing. The zerk fitting is located on the bottom side of the bearing housing.
Lubricate the oil box - A zerk fitting is provided in th.
Check all threaded joints and bolts/nuts to ensure they are tight.

packing maintenance

Keep packing lubricated. A clay based, water insoluble grease - similar to AP-1 by Jet-Lube - is recommended. A zerk fitting is provided in the packing box.
Lubricate packing every 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
Add more grease when packing begins to leak. This will normally stop leakage.
When greasing no longer controls leakage, Packing must be adjusted.

packing Adjustment

Loosen the set screw.
Tighten the packing adjusting gland approximately 1/4 - 1/2 turn.
NOTE: This is a left hand thread.
Tighten the set screw.
Refer back to Packing Maintenance steps.
Continue these two (2) headings until all adjustment is exhausted, at next leak, packing is required to be replaced.

packing Replacement

Remove the four (4) bolts holding the washpipe.
Remove the four (4) bolts holding the packing box.
Slide packing box down onto washpipe and remove from swivel.
Remove washpipe. Examine washpipe for grooving. If grooving is present, replacement is required.
Remove the mudslinger from the washpipe.
Unscrew packing adjusting gland.
NOTE: This is a left hand thread.
Remove packing seat ring, and replace if worn.
Remove the one (1) packing ring.
Remove Lantern Ring, and replace if worn.
Remove the five (5) packing rings, located beneath the Lantern Ring.
Remove Packing Gland, and replace if worn.
Remove o-rings two (2) from the packing gland.
Check Packing Box for grooves in ID. If present, and grooves look to be deep (1/8” to side), replace Packing Box.
Remove O-Ring from top of Packing Box.
Remove O-Ring from top of Spindle.
Reverse steps 1 - 14 for re-assembly.
Install the packing gland first. Then build up to the packing adjusting gland. (make sure to install all o-rings)
Lubricate Packing. Packing Adjusting Gland should be hand-tightened during re-assembly.
Continue with Packing Maintenance and Packing Adjustment steps, listed above.

Bearing Adjustment

If end play (up and down movement) is discovered during inspection, adjust Bearing Adjusting Nut.
Loosen and remove the two (2) set screws locking the adjusting nut located just below the Lower Oil Box.
Tighten the Bearing Adjusting Nut until end play is between .001 - .003.
NOTE: This is a left hand thread.
Replace and tighten set screws.
NOTE: Make contact on one side (Do not tighten). Install and tighten other side. Then tighten both sides.

Housing Seal Replacement

Upper Seal:
1. Should be replaced every three (3) to four (4) months. This seal is the main protection from mud and water entering the bearing case.
2. Remove Packing Box Assembly – See Packing Replacement steps 1-3.
3. Remove Bonnet, Eight (8) bolts hold Bearing Housing in place.
4. Remove seal from Bonnet.
5. Remove O-Ring from under-side of Bonnet.
6. Reverse steps above for re-assemble.
7. Check wear sleeve on spindle for wear. If wear sleeve is grooved more then 1/32 deep per side it needs to be replaced.
  1. This is a sweat fit. Heat will need to be applied to the wear sleeve to remove.
  2. Make sure spindle is clean before installing new wear sleeve.
  3. Reverse steps above to replace the wear sleeve.

Lower Seal:
1. Should be changed every three (3) to four (4) months, or when visual leakage occurs
2. Break Lower Sub (End of power head spindle) loose, and then unscrew.
3. Raise swivel for approximately four (4) inch clearance between Kelly Sub and end of spindle.
4. Unscrew and remove the eight (8) bolts holding oil box to Bearing Housing.
5. Slide lower oil box down and then remove.
6. Remove the two (2) oil seals.
7. Remove the O-Ring in top of oil box.
8. Reverse steps above for re-assembly.

NOTE: Be sure the lips of the oil seals do not turn under while installing. This will cause grease to leak and wear out the OD of Bearing Adjusting Nut.

Note: Verify the OD of the bearing adjusting nut is free from grooving. If grooved more the 1/16” deep per side the adjusting nut will need to be replaced.

Bearing Replacement

Remove the two set screws from the lower connection
Unscrew the lower connection from the bearing spindle. (Note: this is a left hand thread)
Remove spindle thread seal from lower connection.
Remove the two set screws from the bearing adjusting nut.
Remove weld stop from below bearing adjusting nut.
Unscrew the bearing adjusting nut from the bearing spindle. (Note: this is a left hand thread)
Remove the packing assembly.
See Packing Replacement steps 1 - 3.
Remove the eight (8) bolts attaching the bonnet to the bearing housing.
Remove the bonnet from the bearing housing.
Remove the o-ring from the bottom portion of the bonnet.
Remove the eight (8) bolts attaching the oil box to the bearing housing. (Bottom of the bearing housing)
Remove the oil box from the bearing housing.
Remove the o-ring from the spindle above the bearing adjusting nut threads.
Remove the lower bearing shield from the spindle.
Remove the spindle from the bearings and bearing housing.
Remove the two (2) lower bearings from the bearing housing.
Remove the four (4) upper bearing from the bearing housing.
Remove the upper bearing shield from the bearing spindle.
Clean and inspect all parts. All rubber parts should be replaced. Replace all items showing wear or damage.
Reverse sets above for reassembly.
