Daily service

​

1. Inspect swivel for leaks and damage. Do not use if present. Replace and/or repair before drilling

2. Lubricate bearings through zerk fitting located on lower part of bearing housing

   1. Rotate swivel approximately one hour prior to greasing​

   2. Always lubricate while until is rotating

   3. Lubricate until grease exits the upper housing seal

3. Lubricate packing through the zerk fitting located on the gooseneck

   1. Packing should be lubricated a minimum of twice a day​

   2. Always lubricate while the swivel is rotating with no pressure (air and/or mud)

      • If swivel becomes hard to rotate after greasing, relieve grease pressure by depressing the ball of the zerk fitting

      • Do not stand in front of zerk fitting while performing this operation, grease is under pressure and can cause injury​

packing maintenance

The 4JW is equipped with pressure-energized, V-Ring packing that is adjustable via the 4JW-23 Packing Adjusting Gland. This adjustment is only used when greasing will no longer prevent unit leak.​

Packing Leakage:

​

1. Lubricate packing through zerk fitting located on the gooseneck body. The pressure from the grease will normally stop unit from leaking

   • Always lubricate while the swivel is rotating​

   • If unit becomes hard to rotate after greasing, depress ball of zerk fitting (see Daily Service #3)

2. Repeat Step 1 until greasing will no longer stop leakage. When greasing does not stop unit from leaking, the packing will require adjustment via the packing adjusting gland

3. To adjust packing:

   1. Stop the flow of fluids (air and/or mud) through swivel​

   2. Stop swivel rotation

   3. Loosen the (2) 4JW-24 back-up nuts on packing adjusting gland

   4. Tighten packing adjusting gland by no more than a quarter-turn via left-hand thread (left to tighten). 

      • If adjusted more than quarter-turn, packing will be over-tightened causing premature packing and washpipe failure. Over-tightening the packing adjusting gland prevents packing the space needed to expand under pressure​

   5. Tighten back-up nuts

   6. Proceed to Steps 1 & 2

   7. Repeat Step 3 until packing adjustment is exhausted. After performing packing adjustment and proper lubrication of the unit's packing does not stop swivel from leaking fluid, packing will require replacement

Packing Replacement:

​

1. Stop pressure flow of drilling fluids (air and/or mud)

2. Stop rotation of swivel

3. Bring power head down to lowest position

4. Remove rotary hose

5. Loosen the (2) 4JW-24 packing adjusting screws

6. Remove the (4) bolts holding gooseneck to bearing housing

7. Remove 4JW-04 Gooseneck

8. Turn gooseneck upside-down on flat surface

9. Remove 4JW-23 Packing Adjusting Gland

10. Remove packing assembly (packing rings, lantern ring, adapter)

11. Clean packing bore in gooseneck, check zerk fitting hole for foreign material, remove if present

12. Check 4JW-25 Washpipe for grooves

    • Replace washpipe if grooves are deeper than 1/16"

13. With gooseneck still upside-down on flat surface, install new packing. Apply grease between each pressure ring. Install in the following order

    1. 4JW-20-(FABRIC/STEEL) Adapter​

       • Flat side down, flush with gooseneck ceiling​

    2. Three (3) pressure rings

       • A packing set consists of four (4) pressure rings. One (1) of the three (3) pressure rings will be either softer or harder construction than the other three (3) pressure rings of the set, depending on packing set compound you received.

       • Depending on packing set acquired (4JW-20 standard, 4JW-20-408 extra-low pressure, 4JW-20-416 low pressure, 4JW-847 high pressure)​, install the standalone pressure ring first - against the adapter - followed by two (2) more pressure rings

         • Packing and adapter height should be level to, or slightly below zerk fitting hole.​

    3. Install 4JW-21 Lantern Ring

    4. ​Install one (1) pressure ring​

    5. Install 4JW-23 Packing Adjusting Gland and 4JW-24 Packing Adjusting Bolts with nuts

    6. Adjust 4JW-23 Packing Adjusting Gland until contact is made with pressure ring

       • DO NOT TIGHTEN​

14. Install Gooseneck

15. Install and tighten the four (4) cap screws that secure gooseneck to bearing housing

16. Connect rotary hose

17. Adjust power head as needed

18. Resume rotation and pressure flow

19. If unit is leaking, perform Step 3 of "Packing Leakage," above

​Major repair

​

1. Uninstall unit from drilling rig and move swivel to a safe working area on flat surface

2. Loosen 4JW-24 Packing Adjusting Bolts

3. Remove the four (4) bolts holding gooseneck to bearing housing

4. Remove 4JW-04 Gooseneck and place upside-down on flat surface

5. From gooseneck assembly, remove the following:

   1. (1) 4JW-07 Housing Seal​

   2. (1) 4JW-23 Packing Adjusting Gland

   3. (1) 4JW-20 Pressure Ring

   4. (1) 4JW-21 Lantern Ring

   5. (3) 4JW-20 Pressure ring

   6. (1) 4JW-20-(FABRIC/STEEL) Adapter

6. Remove set screw from 4JW-25 Washpipe

7. Unthread washpipe from 4JW-08 Spindle

   • Note: Washpipe to spindle is a left-hand thread, turn right to loosen​

8. Remove 4JW-17 Spindle Thread Seal

9. Lift bearing housing assembly off of spindle

10. From bearing housing assembly, remove the following:

    1. (2) 15WX-12 Bearing​

    2. (1) 4JW-07 Housing Seal

11. Clean and inspect all parts. Replace if showing signs of wear

12. Reverse Steps 1 - 10 to reassemble
